This process uses leaves, leather (lambskin, sheepskin, and cowhide) with mordants (mineral salts) to permanently imprint the color and patterns of the leaves onto the leather, both with and without a color background. Botanical Printing Techniques - Leaf Gathering: We'll discuss the best leaves for this process, as well as methods for storing and preserving. - Design and Methodology: Learn different approaches to the process, whether you prefer spontaneous "happy accidents" or more predictable results. - Equipment: Get an overview of the necessary tools and where to find them. - Leather: Learn about different leathers and which work best with Botanical Printing. - Mordants: Understand how mineral salts fix leaf imprints to the leather and how to use them effectively. - Dye Blankets: Learn about using pre-dyed blankets for adding background color and how to create your own. - Resources: A guide to sourcing all materials. By the end of the workshop, you'll have three beautifully crafted pieces of printed leather, plus a detailed manual on the process to ensure success in future Botanical Printing endeavors. Looking for a creative way to use your Botanical Printed leather? Check out our Journal Making Workshop. Materials Provided: All materials are included in the class cost, with all tools and equipment available for in-class use. Leaves will be provided, but feel free to bring specific leaves from your area. Leaves high in tannin, such as oak, maple, hickory, sumac, sweet gum, and smoke tree, print well, along with many others like beech, elm, aspen, and ironwood.
